Leaf Puja Uniqueness
According to the Ramayana saga, when Hanuman discovered the trace of Seethamma and explained it to her, Seethamma became very happy and blessed Hanuman by cutting the nearby betel leaves and placing them on his head. Since then it has become a tradition to perform leaf puja to the lord.
Benefits of Pooja
Success: One gets success in the tasks undertaken. Shani Dosha
Remedies: The effect of Saturn or other Shani Doshas on the day will be reduced.
Freedom from difficulties: Mental worries and fears are removed and courage is gained.
Ayurajogya: Health problems get rid of and life span increases.
Things needed for worship
Betel leaves for pooja: Fresh, unripe betel leaves (usually 108 or more).
Sandalwood & Saffron: For writing on leaves.
Maredu leaves or Tulsi: For extra pooja.
Puja Process
Purification: Betel leaves used for Puja should be washed clean and dried.
Name inscription: Writing "Sri Rama" with sandalwood or saffron on top of each betel leaf is very special. The name Rama is very dear to Hanuman.
Ashtottara Shatanamavali: Chanting the 108 names of Lord Hanuman (Hanuman Ashtottaram), one leaf for each name should be offered at the Lord's feet or on the idol.
Decoration: In some kshetras, betel leaves are tied into garlands and offered to the lord (leaf garland).
Offering: Vadappu, drink or plantains are offered as an offering.
When should it be performed?
Tuesday & Saturday: These two days are most auspicious for Anjaneya Swami.
Hanumajjayanti: It is most auspicious to perform Aaku Puja on the birthday of Lord.
Moola Nakshatra: This pooja gives special results on the Moola Nakshatra, the birth star of Hanuman.
A little secret: Legend has it that a "kamadhenu" resides in the betel nut. By writing the name of Rama with such a sacred leaf and worshiping the Lord, one gets the grace of all the deities.
