About This Puja

In Hinduism, "Go-Grasam" (providing food to the cow) is considered a very auspicious act. It is believed that feeding the cow, the seat of all the gods, removes ancestral sins and brings all auspiciousness.

Here is an explanation of the intention and its significance while offering this Go-Grasam:

What is Go-Grasam?

"Go" means cow, and "Grasam" means food. Offering green grass, bran, bananas, or soaked rice/chickpeas to a cow is called Go-Grasam.

Importance of Cow-Grasam

Blessing of all gods: Legends say that there are 33 crore gods in the body of a cow. If you feed a cow, you will get the result of worshipping all the gods.
Dosha Remedy: Especially those who have Saturn and Rahu planetary defects in their horoscope and those who have fertility problems will get relief by giving cow-Grasam.
Satisfaction of the ancestral gods: It is believed that feeding a cow on new moon days will appease the ancestral gods.

Cow-Grass Sankalpa

When doing any charity, by saying 'Sankalpa', the merit of that charity will be directly received by us or by those we wish.

Sankalpa method:

  1. Take water in your hand or hold akshinta and say your name and gotra.
  2. Think of the following thought in your mind:

"May the Supreme Lord be pleased with all the hardships of my mother, may the form of the mother be the source of all the divine gifts, may my family be healthy and wealthy, may the father be the source of peace, may I offer cow-grasm to him."

Important Verse: It is auspicious to recite this verse while feeding the cow:

"Saurabheyyaḥ sarvahitāḥ pavitraḥ punyarasāyaḥ | pratigrihyanthu me grasam gavastrailokya mataraḥ ||" (Meaning: O mothers of all the worlds! You who are pure and blessed, accept this food that I am offering and bless me.)

Rules to follow while offering cow-grasam

Method: It is respectful to offer food in a clean vessel or banana leaf, rather than directly with your hand. However, some believe that feeding the cow with your hand removes negative energy from you.
What to offer?: Green grass, soaked beans, tava mixed with jaggery or fruits can be offered.
Pradakshina: After offering the grasam, one should do three pradakshinas to the cow and bow down.
